In this commissioned photo-set, Elmira Watts avoids conventional ballroom shots of professional dance pair Alex and Lisa Ivanets (UK Latin champions). Instead, she depicts the dancers first in full costume, in a setting that suggests a stage; then, by contrast, in everyday dance-studio wear, rehearsing outdoors on an ordinary domestic deck. This inspired transposition and contrast is the photographer's individual touch. It lifts the photo-set out of the ordinary. The composition, geometry and lighting of the deck shots are masterful. The outdoor scenery becomes almost like a painted backdrop, the deck almost a stage.
